Pets (domestic carnivores; pet and other rodents, lagomorphs (rabbits and hares, etc.), living fi sh, reptiles not intended for sale, aviary birds, living amphibians, invertebrates) accompanying travellers arriving from third countries are not subject to veterinary inspection when they meet the following cumulative conditions:
● they must not exceed a certain quantity (which varies according to the species listed above);
● they must be accompanied by an offi cial document fi lled out and signed by a veterinarian in the country of origin and presented for customs clearance.
Note: monkeys are not on the list of animals travellers are allowed to bring into the country without veterinary inspection.
Certain species of wild animals (reptiles, amphibians, parakeets, parrots) are covered by the Washington Convention on Endangered Species. Their importation requires authorisation (CITES permit), delivered by the locally competent Regional Environment Directorate (Direction Régionale de l’Environnement - DIREN). However, in the family of psittacides (parakeets and parrots), the following three species (agapornis roseicollis or rosy-faced lovebird, melopsittacus undulatus or budgerigar, nymphicus hollandicus) are not covered by the Washington Convention.
The importation of certain protected animals is strictly prohibited.
